Paule Josephe: artistic fabric manipulator

Paule Josephe is the clothing brand of Hannah Vanspauwen (designer) & Tiny Geeroms (photographer).

Their common love for texture, movement, aesthetics and stories is their driving force for new ways of producing, communicating and consuming.

After studying at KASK, Hannah was able to work as a design intern at Alexander McQueen in London in 2018. After six months, she decided to return to Belgium to work on her own projects with Tiny.

Their passion for sustainability combined with their love for handling fabrics gave birth to P.J.

Hannah and Tiny participate in TOP-atelier with Paule Josephe in which they rework men’s shirts into shirts with extra treatments (smocking, ribbons, …) and unique embroideries.

  • Design phase: After observing the available end-of-life garments, Paul Josephe chose men’s shirts. This is a timeless motif, on which they apply manipulations, transformations and embroidery techniques to also eliminate any stains or holes.
  • Choice of materials: Paule Josephe wanted to work exclusively with natural materials. Due to the shortage of quality shirts, men’s shirts with a cotton-polyester mixture were also used.
  • Influence of material-technical criteria on the design: The large men’s shirts were chosen so that manipulations such as smocking techniques could be applied. The hems were shortened and the cuttings were recovered to make ribbons and a belt. The bracelets were also removed.
  • Influenced by the methodology of ‘circular design’: Paule Josephe designs from the basic material for a long life: timeless and neutral. With their own unique style and embroidery, the designers want to create a ‘bond’ with their consumers, so that they cherish their purchases for longer and know the history of the brand. They also attach great importance to personal service for their customers.
